After Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman returns from her 10-day trip to the US after attending the World Bank-IMF meeting earlier this month, the eagerly anticipated 47th Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council meeting, which will focus on the restructuring of the GST rate and the extension of the GST compensation cess, may now take place in the first week of May.
The extension of the GST compensation cess to states is one of many topics on the Council’s agenda that could become contentious if the government declines to comply with the proposal given the strident demand from numerous opposition-ruled states.
