The government has shared some exciting information about the world’s highest rail bridge over the Chenab river in Jammu and Kashmir, which is currently in the final stages of construction. A video posted on the Ministry of Railways’ official Twitter account gives a sneak peek into the bridge’s construction.
There are a few things you should know about the Chenab Arch Bridge.
- The bridge links the valley of Kashmir to the rest of the world.
- The bridge is 1315 metres long with a 467-meter arch.
- Since it is 359 metres above sea level, it will be recognised as the world’s highest bridge.
- The Chenab Arch Bridge is 35 metres taller than the Eiffel Tower.
- The main foundation’s one steel pier stands at 131 metres, 72 metres higher than Delhi’s Qutub Minar.
- The bridge can withstand winds of up to 266 kilometres per hour.
- At one point, 3200 people were employed in the bridge’s design.
- The bridge’s design life is expected to be 120 years.
The Ministry of Railways updated the public on the project’s status last month. The steel arch of the Chenab bridge is now closed, according to the ministry.
According to a PTI report, Konkan Railway Chairman Sanjay Gupta reported that the project would be completed by December 2021. He went on to say that building this bridge was the most difficult task in the Kashmir railway link project “undertaken in the 150-year-long history of Indian Railways.”
The massive arch-shaped structure took over 5,462 tonnes of steel to build, and it was designed in hostile terrain. The Chenab bridge will act as a critical connection in the 111-kilometer stretch between Katra and Banihal. This is part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link project by Indian Railways.
